Billy Soul Bond vs Jesi Terrell

March 31, 2013

The return to Chicago of Jesi Terrell, a home-grown vocalist who’s been living in the D.C. area for several years. Terrell broke onto the local scene in the ‘90s; since then her voice has developed into a full-bodied instrument, nuanced and expressive. Love Mechanic (Sound Mindz), her most recent release, is a somewhat sparsely produced outing that nonetheless showcases her vocal gifs at their richest, as she traverses easily from sex-kitten insinuation (the title song) through hard-edged assertiveness (the billowy, mid-tempo “Don’t Get Off on Me”) to deep-soul pathos (“Love Affair,” the ironically church-tinged “Hooked On the Street”). The disk also includes “Stay Home Kitty Kitty,” her riposte to Bonds’ hit, which she first released as CD single a few years back and which raises the tantalizing possibility that this evening might culminate in a cat-scratch showdown.
